Here are the first shoots of the potatoes I planted in March. These are Premier, a lovely floury new potatoe, a second early. I was able to get them in before the rabbit fence has gone up to give them more time. I covered them with straw from the cow shed and this protected them from a late frost at the end of the month. I planted 20 tubers of Premier and double the amount of King Edward as a maincrop.
Big day today! The rabbit fence is up! We put in the posts yesterday and dug the trenches and today we got the wire in. It looks so professional. We had to dig down about 6 inches and placed the wire in like an L shape with the bottom of the L going away from the patch. This stops the rabbits being able to tunnel under the wire. This means that about a foot of the chicken wire is underground, leaving about three feet above it. We used 1.5 inch wire which has worked completely so far. Lots of rabbit droppings outside the patch but no sign of a tunnel. Hard work but worth it.
I feel so happy now that the Patch is 'safe' from rabbits and can't wait to get sowing....carrots, parnsips, peas, salad.....mmmm!
